Tower Of Human Skulls Found In Mexico

New portions of an Aztec tower of human skulls dating from the 1400s have been discovered beneath Mexico City by archaeologists.
The National Institute of Anthropology and History (Inah) revealed on Friday that the crew had discovered the facade and eastern side of the tower, as well as 119 human skulls of men, women, and children, adding to the hundreds previously discovered.
The tower, which has a diameter of about five meters (16.4 feet), was first discovered in 2017 and the most recent findings were made in March.
It's thought to be part of the Huey Tzompantli, a massive collection of skulls that terrified the Spanish conquistadores when they conquered the city in 1521 under Hernán Cortés.
The cylindrical structure is located near the Metropolitan Cathedral, which was built on top of the Templo Mayor, one of the principal temples of the Aztec city Tenochtitlan, which is now Mexico City.
"The Templo Mayor continues to amaze us, and the Huey Tzompantli is without a doubt one of our country's most amazing archaeological discovery in recent years," Alejandra Frausto, Mexico's cultural minister, said in an Inah statement.
The tower was built in three phases, according to archaeologists, and dates from 1486 to 1502.
The initial discovery of the tower astonished anthropologists, who expected to see the skulls of young male warriors, but instead discovered the crania of women and children, raising issues about human sacrifice under the Aztec Empire.
