How to Fit, Shape, and Wear a New Baseball Cap
By Mai Huong Vu on Feb 23, 2022
A prevalent American fad is to wear a baseball cap to any event or occasion. Baseball caps first appeared in the middle of the 18th century and gained popularity at the turn of the century. The bill of a traditional baseball cap was large enough to hide the wearer's eyes from the sun or rain. A cloth-covered button was traditionally sewed on top of a baseball hat, with grommets or eyelets around the cap for ventilation.
Baseball caps are now more popular than ever, among men and women alike. Fitted hats in typical hat sizes are offered, as well as adjustable caps with a snapback or slide closure. Fitting, shaping and wearing a fitted cotton cap and an adjustable cotton cap can be done in a variety of ways.
Fitting a Baseball Cap
The bill of a well-fitting baseball cap should lie in the middle of your forehead, comfortably above your ears. The baseball cap's crown should cover your entire head, leaving a small gap between your skull and the cap. A baseball cap should be able to stay on your head in the event of a wind gust while not leaving a mark on your forehead. You should be able to rotate the cap around your head easily to wear it forward or backward.
If the crown of your fitting baseball cap is too tight, dampen it with hot water and set it on the outside of a bowl or pot. The band of the hat will stretch and grow larger as it dries.
You can spray water on the inside and outside of the band without spraying the portion near the brim if your fitted baseball cap is a bit loose. Place the cap on a flat surface, such as a kitchen counter, and begin drying the outside of the band with a hairdryer. Start drying the interior of the band with the hairdryer after flipping the cap onto the crown. Place the cap on your head while the band is still slightly damp, and let it air dry while you wear it.
Breaking In a Baseball Cap
To break in a new baseball cap, wet it with hot water and wear it for a few days. Curve or flatten the bill with your hands while wearing it to get the shape you want. Wear the baseball cap as it dries to ensure that it adheres to your head's contour.
Shaping the Bill of a Baseball Cap
Wearing a baseball cap with a flat brim that only slightly curves over your face is currently popular. If you want to flatten the bill of a new baseball cap, moisten it with hot water, set it on a flat surface, and weigh it down with a flat-bottomed cooking pot filled with water.
If you want a new baseball cap's bill to curve, carefully spritz it with hot water and gently roll it until it fits inside a large coffee mug. Allow the baseball cap to dry in the mug until it reaches the desired form.
Wearing a New Baseball Cap
When you first put on a baseball cap, flatten or curve the bill with your hands often to shape and tailor the bill's contour. Your new hat will eventually respond to your adjustments and assume the shape you desire.
